Whether it’s information or propaganda is a matter of interpretation. But along with all the Olympic pavilions, Vancouver now has a center devote to explaining the downtown eastside to visitors. Belle Puri reports.

Vancouver’s dark side has no tourists reputation, as the generalist sent to the downtown eastside, politicians want to ensure their message gets out. To that end, information center’s been opened. Full of details about social housing, outreach programme and support services.

“We also the same time have tours, we take them walking tours, show them the difference we’re making.”

And if that doesn’t do, the center offers what it calls appointment with there residents. So they can tell their own stories. As Vancouver counts down to the Olympics. The downtown eastside remains huge problem. And we’ve media who already arrived, already know that. And the questions have begun.

“I’m always wondering why they didn’t try to solve the problem earlier. So it seems one of the last choice at least to show they’re dealing with the problem.”

“Why couldn’t you solve that problem in spending a lot of money on your Olympic games, before the games?”

“Well, a lot of money has been spent on housing and particular over this last two years.”

Vancouver’s mayor says the city have no intention of covering up the homelessness problem.

A people can walk the streets and talk to whoever they may like. We just wanted to be sure that some of the work’s beening done has highlighted.

After this put, their own spin of the opening on the center.

“This BC housing chaos tent to white wash the basic housing crisis and homeless crisis that downtown eastside is experiencing. This office is a propaganda office.”

Thirty eight none profit groups came gathering at the center with the belief some people from other cities with similar problems visiting here next few weeks could learn valuable lessons about how to connect with the people on the street.
