Mcdonald’s restaurants have launched a massive recall. It’s centered around the latest promotion involving drinking glasses with characters from the new Shrek movie. The paint on those glasses contains a toxic chemical. So millions of them are being called back. Lisa Johnson has the details.
The recall is so new; this busy restaurant in Downtown Vancouver is still advertising the popular glasses. “Take them home” the sign says. But now customers are told to bring them back. Each glass’ feature’s a character from last Shrek movie in bright color paint. The problem is now know that paint contains cadmium, a toxic cedimedal, a known carcinogen.
“So when cadmium gets into your body, it starts eating away your kidney, actually soft your bone. That is a very nasty, a very nasty chemical.”
“No, I didn’t even know about that.”
And the parents who we talked to haven’t heard the recall yet. But when we told them, they won’t surprise.
“They love things like this but I don’t get them that often. I will get the toys.”
Many said it frustrating how often the products designed for and market to kids aren’t save. Like the children jewelry recalled last January for again high levels of cadmium.
“We just say no to whole bunch of stuffs. Just like I’m not buying little jewelry for my little girl. It’s just not gonna happen.”
“You know it’s sort of what kids want. So, you kind of balance everything.”
As for Mcdonald’s, it did says it has high safety standards. It said in the statement “The glasses were evaluated by an independent third party laboratory and determined to be fully in compliance with all applicable Canadian requirement at the time of manufacture and distribution.”If it’s in your kitchen, stop using them, you can return them to any Mcdonald restaurant for a cash refund.
