Well this gives new meaning to the phrase cash and carry, pregnant women will soon have to pay hospitals in British Columbia to review the gender of their unborn child. So, could the practice catch on in the rest of the Canada, Chris Brown reports.

Cassandra and Chris Frederickson are waiting forty weeks for the big review. They want to get to know their baby now on a 3D ultrasound.

“It’s the No. 1 question you always get from everybody. You know, do you know what the sex it, do you know if it’s a boy or girl.”

“We decided to just go with everything neutral but there’s part of us that wants to buy pink or blue so.”

The ultrasound technician can usually tell the gender of the detail 20 weeks’ scan. But it not always included in the official reporter to the doctor. Now the BC government wants to make parents pay $50 to put it in.

“It’s not automatically necessary procedure and what the medical services plan pays for and our health care plan pays for are those things of automatically necessary. So it is an option and people wish to pay for that and then they can have that additional option.”

“What they’re doing is on a women’s personal health information, they’re saying we have the information, we wouldn’t share to you unless you gives us 50 bucks. It’s a shake now.”

We check with Canada’s abstatute society in several provincial medical associations and no one knew of any other place they charge the parents for gender determination. Outside the maternity store, pregnant Mom though it a cash grab.

“If I really want to know, I would pay the money and I think most of people would.”

Indeed $50 is still a bargain compare to the several hundreds dollars some parents pay it private ultrasound clinics to have that early introduction to their baby. The Fredericksons now know it’s a girl and already decided on her name. And that is one secret they’re going to keep to themselves.
