When the provincial government wants to release something without attracting too much attention, it often does it on a Friday afternoon. And today it released a list of items that will have a higher tax rate under the HST. Heather Robinson is at the legislature right now, Victoria. Heather.

Well, that’s right Gloria, I mean, many of us here are at the legislature from the press gallery to the opposition have been trying to get our hands on that list. Since last summer, when we heard the HST was coming to British Columbia, we want to know what items that are currently exempt from provincial sales tax will be hit the full 12% HST, when it comes to effect. Finally today we have that list. Now some things that we can expect paying more for included your basic cable, phone, home renovations, landscaping, real estate fee, now many of these we’ve been talking about before, many of these are in the public light. But here are few that are new to some of us, if you buy a smoke detector, if you buy a fist aid kit, for the first time, those items will now be tax both the provincial and the federal tax. You know, anything from buying a book, to going to the movies, to hopping into a cab, it’s going to jump from that 5% GST, up to a full 12 percent HST.

Heather, why did the government release this list?

Well, there’s been off a lot of pressure coming from the public, from the media, and from the all of those who oppose the HST to give finally a detailed, comprehensive list. Ontario has already done it. Bill Radisson, he is initiative co-election that release, that’s working on the petition. They release what they called a hit list, it’s a little while ago, and things they claim are going to be hit the HST. Well, the Finance Minister Colin Hansen said it was a full of mistakes, trying to correct that and here we go, six weeks before HST, comes into effect, we finally have that comprehensive list. We now know exactly where is going to hit us the most.
