A big travel distraction is the subject of our Go Public story tonight. A Canadian couple found themselves stranded in Europe and not because of volcanic ash. They bought their tickets online, but the travel company never made the booking. Kathy Tomlinson has this cautionary tale for travelers.

Online, the fares look great. So Roger Cottrill and Betty Calam booked flights to Portaugal through Flight Network. The email confirmation came right way.

“As far as we’ve concerned, we’re good to go.”

All good, until they got to London for their connecting flight. Portugal’s tab air said their booking didn’t exist.

“We were told that we were not on their screen.”

Calam ‘s son was waiting for them in Lisbon. Air Canada tab their partner got them new tickets and they race to make the flight.

“And I don’t think, I’ve ever run harder and fast in my entire life.”

Getting home was worse, again they weren’t booked, they had no choice but to buy first class tickets for $2300.

“It was outrageous.”

“And probably, If we had phone business class rather than looking for a deal, it would been cheaper.”

Turns out Flight Network sold them cheap seat that weren’t actually for sell. Airline record show the day after it booked them, Flight Network was told the discount fare has been cancelled.

“We were not informed.”

The ruler in Ontario where the Flight Network is say that shouldn’t happen.

“So anything that verse or changed of that nature should be advised to the consumer.”

Flight Network refused our request to an interview, but 4 month after this mix up, now it’s showing a refund. The consumers association of Canada got 500 complains about online travel sites last year. Their advice, double check reservations and prices, consider directly booking with the airline and or use a credited travel agent. Thant’s what they suggested. Peter.
